On Saturday 19 July, the Victorian Championship Sprint event was held at Whiskey Flat Range, Mt Hotham.

Snow conditions were the best in many years and with the sun shining and temperature rising to 1 degree C, conditions were perfect for competitors, officials and spectators.

There were two race starts, with most of those aged over 18 in the first race group, with others following in the second group.

Winner of the blue ribbon Men's Open was Damon Morton, with Giles Richardson taking the silver and Hamish McLean the bronze.

In the blue ribbon Women's Open, sole participant Irene Dunn took the gold.

Australian Biathlon has been thrilled to host visiting International Biathlon Union official Coach Ubaldo Prucker. Coach Prucker is one of the founding members of the IBU and was the official responsible for running biathlon at both the 2006 Olympic Winter Games and the 2013 Winter University Games. Coach Prucker has been conducting a review to assist Australian Biathlon with our long term development. After presenting participants with their medals, Coach Prucker very kindly ran a skiing clinic, for participants and coaches alike. Here he is pictured with our youngest participant, Nicholas Wilkinson, who took part in the Mens Under 9 laser class.

IBU Youth/Junior World Champs – Damon Morton stars

Of the twenty-four Australians participating in biathlon events in the 2013/14 Northern Hemisphere season, the highest-placed athlete to date is Damon Morton.

Morton, 17, from Marlo, VIC, has been participating in Youth events this season. The highlight of his 2013/14 campaign is his result in the Youth Men Sprint at World Youth/Juniors Championships, which are underway at Presque Isle, Maine, USA. Damon placed 11th out of a field of 62 finishers, in a time of 20:32.4 (0+2), 57.4 seconds behind the combined result of the top three finishers.

This is the best result for any Australian athlete, Men or Women, at IBU Youth/Junior World Championships, in recent years.
